The rapid release of this trapped person must be your highest priority, to prevent further injury. In accordance with the law on working conditions and the consequent duty of care, an employer is required to prepare employees for this possible scenario. Surface Ice Rescue Specialist (SIRS)

For personnel who operate on frozen, large volume rivers with open leads.

This course typically runs 3 days and covers all of the skills taught in Surface Ice Rescue Technician (SIRT), as well as addressing the substantially higher-risk environment encountered when working on large volume rivers with open leads. Also covered are size up, risk analysis, and hazard mitigation, PPE considerations, self-rescue techniques, and throw bagging. Scenario-based training using both standard and improvised ice rescue equipment will be carried out.

This course can also be taught as a 1 day upgrade for students who have already completed the Surface Ice Rescue Technician (SIRT) course.

The Confined Space Rescue Operator (CSRO) course introduces the knowledge and skills required by personnel to operate safely and effectively during confined space rescues and be an active part of a confined space rescue team working under the supervision of Confined Space Rescue Technicians. Topics that are covered include: hazards of confined spaces, gas detection, legislation and guidelines on the area of confined spaces, knowledge of knots, loads and forces, building anchors, using pulley systems, use of tripod, self-climbing and rappelling, lowering and hoisting of rescuer and victim, standard configurations, stretchers used for confined space, situation analysis and incident management around incidents in confined spaces.

The Rescue from Vehicles in Water workshop is a specialist course for Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Technicians that explores the skills required to deal with car related rescues in Swiftwater and Floods. The course looks at vehicle behavior and stabilization in water, as well as access techniques and victim extrication. Vehicle hydrology, glass management, anchors, and weight transfer are all addressed in this two day, hands on clinic.

The half-day course is based on international best practice, including the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council’s river safety resources and covers river crossing decision making, shallow water crossing techniques (solo and group), river swimming survival techniques, use of throw-bags and where required, pack floats and wader safety drills are covered. This course is aimed at recreational users only.

Flood Worker Safety

This one day course assists organizations who’s workers may work around flood water, such as road contractors, storm water contractors, flood engineers, and vehicle break down services. We still advocate that the public should never drive in flood water, but while the public hopefully stay indoors during flood events, many critical services such as storm water, roads and other utilities still have to operate and do so as part of mitigating the flooding event. Such critical services need basic training to work safely around flood water.

Professional Qualification Assessment: Rope (PQR)

This assessment provides independent verification of a student’s qualification as a NFPA 1006 Rope Rescue Technician. This assessment is not an instructional course, but rather is a place for fully trained rescuers to prove their competency.

Inland Rescue Swimmer Advanced

The Inland Advanced module, a one day upgrade, is the next step in developing the complete rescue swimmer. The swimmer will spend time learning the techniques and strategies for search and rescue of victims in a slow moving water environment such as large rivers or bays. The management of large events such as plane crashes, boating and commuter incidents will also be discussed. The swimmer will continue to improve safety and survivability of the responder with orientation to helicopter operations to include emergency egress drills and the use of spare air devices.

Inland Rescue Swimmer Coastal

The Coastal Basic module is a one day upgrade and is designed for the responder who is responsible for search and rescue operations on the coastal water fronts. Here the Rescue Swimmer will learn a combination of basic lifeguarding techniques combined with the essentials of inland rescue. The course will cover the water dynamics which occur in the water effected by tide and surf. The swimmer will learn techniques to swimming efficiently and effectively with a continued focus on victim management.

Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Boat Operator

The Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Boat Operator program combines all of the skills learned in the Flood Rescue Boat Operator (FRBO) and Swiftwater Rescue Boat Operator (SRBO) courses. Students will learn to handle boats in both flat and moving water (Class III), as well as how to perform rescues safely and effectively in both environments.
